I was inspired by a periscope a couple weeks ago by the kick ass business coach Cyndie Spiegel. She discussed how we are bombarded by images on instagram and social media with inspirational sayings, for example, "FEARLESS." But is this a realistic, or even healthy, goal to be fearless?
According to this article on the science of fear, "fear is an adaptive behavior that we have to help identify threats. It is an ability that has allowed us as humans to survive predators and natural disasters." So fear serves a purpose - it is one way we keep ourselves safe.
But, if I have learned nothing else from surviving law school and the bar exam, it would be that sometimes, the most rewarding things in life are those that we fear but we do anyway. When I had my first art show, I was so afraid that either no one would come or that people would come but no one would like my art. But I decided to do it anyway because, although I was scared, I wanted share what I loved. So I took a chance, had my art show, and not only did people come but they liked, and even bought my art! After all, bravery is not the absence of fear but rather, it is action in the face of fear.
So this year I vow to continue to push myself to do things that I am afraid of. I might not be fearless - but I will fear less. Need a reminder to push yourself to do things even if you are afraid? I made this free fear less printable that you can download here.
What are you afraid of doing this year and how will you face it?
